The Toyota Avalon debuted in 1995, a full-size car designed to replace the Toyota Cressida, discontinued in 1992. The model is currently a flagship sedan in the brand's lineup and a sibling to the celebrated Toyota Camry.
Its first year, the former was available in XL and XLS trims. Both featured 192-horsepower, 3.0-liter V6 engines. In 1997, engine output rose 200 horsepower, followed in 2000 by another 10-horsepower increase, to 210. The 2005 model year saw the addition of Touring and Limited trims, and a 280-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 became available. In 2006, output improved once more, to 268 horsepower.
By 2007, a five-speed automatic transmission was offered standard, and options included anti-lock disc brakes, reclining rear seats, a moonroof, and more. You could even get high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights and remote ignition. For the 2021 model, XLE, XSE, XSE Nightshade, and TRD trims were added, and each had either a 205-horsepower, 2.5-liter I4 engine or a 301-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6, depending on trim. An eight-speed auto transmission was standard, all-wheel drive (AWD) was an option, and other options ranged from dual-zone climate control and push-button start to premium JBL audio, among others. There were even adaptive and sport-tuned suspensions available.
