The Toyota 4Runner is an SUV that debuted in 1984. It's a truck-based one, body-on-frame versus unibody (as a crossover would be).

Early on, the model was offered in two trims, DLX and SR5, both of which had 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engines. By 1988, a 3.0-liter V6 would be available, and in 1996, base and Limited trims were added. They incorporated 2.7-liter, four-cylinder and 3.4-liter V6 engines, respectively.

In 2007, trims included SR5, Sport, and Limited. There were two available engines: a 4.0-liter V6 capable of 236 horsepower and a 4.7-liter V8 that delivered 260 horsepower. A five-speed automatic transmission was standard, and four-wheel drive (4WD) was optional. Features ranged from four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes and air conditioning to fog lights and alloy wheels. You could even get a rear windshield wiper with a washer.

For 2022, trims like SR5 Premium, Trail Special Edition, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Pro are available, and a 4.0-liter V6 engine shelling 270 horsepower comes standard, as does rear-wheel drive (RWD). Features include LED headlights, push-button ignition, a choice of sport and off-road suspensions (depending on trim), a front spoiler, roof rails, and more.
