Original Toyota Belts and Hoses
Belts and Hoses: Everything You Need to Know
What They Do
They move all the auto parts in your Toyota or Scion vehicle that are designed to move. Belts move them mechanically (using other parts), while hoses move them hydraulically (in other words, using liquid pressure).
What Types of Belts There are
Serpentine, drive (also referred to as V-belts), and timing. Serpentine and drive belts move parts in the AC system, like the compressor, for instance, plus those in the alternator, power steering pump, and more. Timing belts help the crankshaft and camshaft turn at the right intervals, coordinating the opening and closing of the engine valves and the pumping of the engine pistons in the process.
What Types of Hoses There are
There are many, for the radiator, heater core, fuel system, brakes, air intake, and more.
Radiator hoses move coolant (also called antifreeze) between the radiator and engine, heater core hoses send hot coolant through the heating and AC system to help warm the cabin, and fuel hoses connect the engine to the gas tank in older Toyota and Scion models. Brake hoses, on the other hand, send brake fluid to the brake calipers, while air intake hoses help the engine regulate its oxygen and fuel complement. There are even hoses for parts like PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valves and oil coolers.
The Symptoms of When They Go Bad
You may be unable to start your vehicle, it may not run right, or it may end up completely disabled. Its belts and hoses may appear visibly loose or obviously damaged, you may hear screeching or chirping sounds, see leaking fluids, and experience battery and interior lighting malfunctions. Your engine may even misfire or overheat, and many systems may start failing generally.
How Often Do They Need to be Changed?
Review your owner's manual for info on mileage limits. Most hoses, though, you should replace every 4 years or so.
Why Buy Genuine OEM Belts and Hoses
Your brand manufactures its belts and hoses to spec for your model. That essentially guarantees they'll fit and work with it -- something that the aftermarket for belts and hoses may not.
